Military: According to Reno Warburton Backus’ the Backus Families of Early New England (page 13), William was appoingted Sergeant of the Windham train band in 1692. he was also ‘poundkeeper and hayward for the great field at the Southe end. . . .’ ” A “train band” (or “trained band) was a type of militia force which existed in England, Wales, and English America between the 16th and 18th centuries.
