Caleb Wells - 4th great grandfather

Born: About 1765-1767 in Rhode Island

Died: 1850 in Painted Post, Stueben County, New York

 

Father: Lt. James Wells

Marriage: 18 February 1790 in Foster, Providence County, Rhode Island to
Rosanna Peterson (1767 - ?).

 

Military: War of 1812. “Family tradition” has it that Caleb was drafted into the New York State Militia for service in the War of 1812 at Plainfield, Otsego County, NY in March 1813. He served under Corporal Anthony Smith, also a resident of Pittsfield. The company was commanded by Captain William Pallmer under Colonel Belner who was under General Brown. Caleb and Corporal Smith were taken prisoner on June 6, 1813 at the Battle of Stoney Creek in Canada. They were taken to prison in Quebec. Corporal Smith was exchanged, but Caleb was not and died in a Québec prsion. Military service records have not been located for Caleb.
