Robert served as an Aviation Metalsmith Second Class and Aviation Radioman, Third Class. Robert was killed in action and died at Fort Read/Waller AFB, Trinidad Island, Trinidad and Tabago. His remains were returned from Ft. Read Graves Registry Cemetery, Trinidad and interred at Golden Gate National Cemetery.

Elbert Henry Knox (1900 - 1944)

Elbert is the son of William S. and Theresa (Schmieder) Knox, making him the great grandson of Lewis and Barbara (_____) Knox. Elbert was a carpenter by trade, and in September 1941, he left for Wake Island where he was employed by a contractor to build the Naval Air base on the island. He was a part of the Contractors Pacific Naval Air Bases (CPNAB) for the Navy. During the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Wake Island, Elbert and other civilian contractors and military personnel were taken prisoner. He was tortured and killed as a Prisoner of War in the Fukuoka, Japan POW Camp #1 and was originally buried at Yokohama Cemetery #1, Japan. He was later interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. Elbert’s grandfather, Leander Knox, served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

George (brother of Ross and Jack) is the son of Ola and Maude (Roberts) McCartney, making him the great-grandson of Saxton and Eliza (Wells) Roberts and Stephen and Nancy (Howard) Winslow. George enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on 7 January 1942, as a Private in Battery “I,” 3rd Battalion, 10th Marines. He was killed in action on 25 October 1942, by shell fgrament wounds in the head when his ship (Yard Patrol #284) was sunk by enemy naval gunfire in the Guadalcanal area (an isalnd of the national of Solomon Island in the south western Pacific, northeast of Australia). His remains were never recovered; there is a memorial for him at Fort William McKinley Cemetery (also known as the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial) in Manila, Republic of the Philippines.
